#189: Guerrero Maya, Jr. vs. Virus, CMLL Martes Arena Mexico (6/7/2011).
This is a 2 Out of 3 Falls Match for the vacant CMLL World Super Lightweight Championship.
The bell sounds, and both men circle one another. Maya takes control of the back first, and Virus quickly transitions to hammerlock the arm. Maya takes the side headlock, and Virus reverses to hammerlock the arm once again. Virus twists the arm around, and Maya nails a drop toe hold into a leg crank. He goes from that to a front face lock, while Virus transitions to an arm bar. Nice back and forth so far!
Maya goes for a surfboard, and Virus counters it into a a chin lock. He’s on Maya’s back, looking for a full nelson of sorts. Maya flips him forward, and we have a bit of a stalemate. Maya grabs the right arm of Virus, and elbows the shoulder. Virus with a drop toe hold, into a leg lock. He goes for Red Ink, Okada style, but Maya is quickly able to escape and go back to the arm. He goes from that, to a leg lock on the mat, which Virus counters into a roll up for 2.
Maya traps the leg, and Virus quickly returns to his feet. So many transitions and counters thus far. Virus kicks Maya in the gut, and snap mares him to the mat. Head scissors submission follows, and Maya reverses it into a roll up for 2. He does it again, and Virus kicks out. More counters and transitions on the mat, and both are back to their feet once again. No one has the advantage so far. Maya takes the arm again, and Virus fights it off, and follows with a nice clothesline in the corner.
Maya kicks Virus away out of the corner, and hits a nice dropkick. He goes to the top rope, and hits a missile dropkick right to Virus’ face. Virus hammerlocks the arm and traps his head in a sit out powerbomb neck crank position. I don’t even know how to describe it. That connects, and Virus follows that with a full nelson submission using his legs, and Maya submits! Virus takes the first fall. That was a fun back and forth exchange between both wrestlers.
The second fall kicks off, with Virus staying on the offensive, working at the arm of Maya. He twists the arm, then drops an elbow on it. He follows by dropping his knee and weight across the arm. Virus with a Kimura Lock on the mat. Maya is able to get to the bottom rope to break the hold. Virus knocks Maya to the mat, and extends the arm out for an arm bar. Maya flips through and gets to the ropes. Virus holds him down for a nearfall.
Maya tries to punch his way back to his feet, and Virus just decks him in the face with his boot. Big chop by Virus, who gets caught with a flying forearm by Maya, and a tilt a whirl backbreaker. Nice spear by Maya, who looks to stay in the lead. Maya with a shoulder tackle, and a springboard back shoulder tackle! He lifts Virus up and traps him in the Dragon Sleeper, and that causes him to submit! Virus takes the second fall. We are all tied up.
The third and final fall begins, as Maya quickly goes for a roll up, and Virus kicks out. Maya connects with a brutal looking neckbreaker, and goes into a Half Crab submission next. Maya brings Virus back to the mat, and applies a half nelson submission to no avail. Back to their feet, Virus connects with a beautiful arm drag. He gets placed on the top rope by Maya, and fights his way to the apron. Virus takes a moment to gloat, and gets hit with a nice looking arm drag from Maya out of the ring to the floor. Maya follows up with a high octane Tope to Virus on the floor!
Back in the ring, Virus avoids a dropkick, and sends Maya to the corner. He irish whips him, and Maya rolls out of the way and traps Virus in a neckbreaker across his knee! He covers, and Virus is able to kick out, mostly because the referee is slow as hell. Virus kicks Maya away, and goes to punch him in the midsection, and Maya catches him and hits another neckbreaker across his knee! He covers, and Virus kicks out again. Maya irish whips Virus into the turnbuckle, then connects with a nasty looking knee to the back of the head. That looked rough as hell. Maya hammerlocks the arm, and then applies a back stretch to Virus across his legs!
Despite the pain, Virus will not give up. Another irish whip sends Virus to the corner, and Maya goes to the top rope. Virus is right there to send him to the floor, then he connects with a rapid fire senton from the ring to the floor, squashing Maya in the process! Back in the ring, Maya elbows Virus away, and goes back to the top rope. He connects with a crossbody, and Virus kicks out again. Nice series of arm drags by Virus, and he applies the Seatbelt rollup, and Maya barely kicks out.
Virus chops Maya into the ropes, and counters an arm drag into a small package for a very close nearfall. Another roll up by Virus, and Maya kicks out. Both men start throwing hard chops at one another, until Virus absolutely decks Maya in the jaw! Maya reverses an irish whip, then goes to the top rope. Virus cuts him off with chops, and hits a nice reverse rana from the top! He makes the cover, and that gets him the final fall, the win, and the championship!
That was a fun little match. I knew nothing of both men coming, but they worked hard and delivered a great back and forth contest. The first two falls were great set up for the remainder of the match. The first fall in particular had great transitions on the mat, and just all around great technical wrestling. The second fall got a little more explosive, as Maya knew he had to win in order to stay in the match. The third fall is where things started getting crazy, as both men’s offense got harder and faster.
They sold the urgency well in that final fall, as well as selling the importance of the championship at stake. Virus, who was the aggressor for the majority of the match, ended up taking the final fall with an aerial move, which I didn’t expect. All in all, for a match I knew nothing about between two people I’ve previously never heard, this delivered in spades. Cagematch, you win again!
