#242: Big Show vs. Rey Mysterio, WWE Backlash (4/27/2003).
This is a request brought to me by one of my buddies at work.
Mysterio hit one 619 on Show recently on Smackdown, knocking Show right on his ass, and now we have a PPV match out of it.
Mysterio is sticking and moving from Show before the bell even rings. Show looks like he wants to literally eat Mysterio head to toe.
The bell sounds, and Show rushes Mysterio on the floor. Mysterio avoids him, and hits a baseball slide dropkick to Show from inside the ring. Show is frustrated, and kicks the steel steps. Show goes to reenter the ring, and Mysterio catches him with a single leg dropkick. Mysterio continues to rush him in the corner, until Show catches him and tosses him hard into the top turnbuckle, whiplashing his head in the process.
Big chop to the chest by Big Show. He goes to irish whip Mysterio, until the smaller man slides out of the ring. Show grabs him by the head and lifts him up, but Mysterio guillotines him. He goes to dive into the ring, until Show catches him with a backbreaker. Hard whip into the corner by Show, as Mysterio’s suffering has only just begun. Show stands all of his weight on Mysterio’s body. Show with an effortless military press slam to Mysterio, who lands on his feet.
He kicks the leg, but Show chops him on the back so hard that Mysterio goes to the outside. Mysterio grabs a chair, and decks Show in the head while the referee is distracted. He dives off the top rope with a leg drop to Show, who gets his shoulder up in time. 619 connects to the gut, and to the legs of Show. Mysterio hits it proper now, and he goes to springboard off the ropes, but Show catches him and destroys him with a chokeslam. That’s an easy win for the Big Show.
Post match, Mysterio is placed on a stretcher. Show returns to the ring, and grabs Mysterio, who is strapped to the stretcher. He swings the stretcher into the ring post, causing Mysterio to land head first onto the floor. That spot is why this match was requested for me. The match is whatever. It’s three minutes of some brief hope spots for Mysterio, but otherwise is another dominate Big Show match in 2003.
The post match spot is bananas, and the fact Mysterio agreed to a spot where he couldn’t realistically protect himself is insane. Wisely, I don’t believe that spot has been repeated since.
