#274: Bron Breakker vs. Jey Uso, WWE Monday Night Raw (9/23/2024).
This is for Bron’s Intercontinental Championship.
I remember when this match happened last year, a lot of people said it was one of the best main events in Raw history. Let’s see if it lives up to that hype!
Jey quickly takes the back, and switches to a side headlock. Bron responds with a hard shoulder tackle. They break off, and stare at one another. Jey takes the back again, and the headlock. Big right uppercut to Bron that sends him to the outside. Jey runs the ropes and hits a Tope, sending Bron into the announce table. The crowd pops hard for him. Back from commercial, and Jey is hitting the 10 punches in the corner. He jumps up onto Bron, who responds with a scoop slam.
Bron with shoulders into the midsection in the corner over and over. He follows up with a hard irish whip into the corner, which seemingly shakes the ring. He hits another irish whip, and Jey crumbles to the mat. Jey looks to fight back with some strikes, but Bron slows him down with a knee to the midsection, and a huge overhead belly to belly suplex. He lays his knee into Jey’s face, as he looks to grind his opponent away.
Nice abdominal stretch on the mat by Bron. He looks for a suplex next, but Jey is fighting it off. Jey tries for one of his own, and Bron just lifts him up and drops him midsection first onto the ropes. Irish whip into the turnbuckle, followed by a backbreaker. Bron makes the cover, but he breaks up his own pin to do some push ups, Big Poppa Pump style! He continues to talk trash at Jey, who ends up sending him back first into the turnbuckle. Step up enziguri, followed by a clothesline to the outside.
Jey looks for another Tope, but Bron cuts him off with an uppercut. He slams Jey’s head off the annouce table repeatedly. Bron goes to the apron, and lands a diving bulldog to Jey, sending both men across the table! Another commercial break goes by, and Bron has Jey in the ring. Jey is back to his feet, firing back with punches. Running hip attack in the corner connects, and Bron is able to kick out. Bron avoids the Uso Splash, and drills Jey with a gutbuster for a nearfall.
Bron lifts Jey up for a military press, but Jey slips free and hits a pop up Samoan Drop for a close nearfall! Jey goes to the top rope, and Bron rushes him. Jey headbutts him away, but Bron runs up the ropes to hit a top rope Frankensteiner, with no hands! He makes the cover, and Jey kicks out. Both men are back up, and they engage in a shoving contest that quickly turns into fisticuffs. Superkick by Jey, and a diving clothesline by Bron.
Pop up powerslam by Bron, and Jey is able to kick out! Bron was confident he had it, and now he’s pissed. On the floor, Bron runs almost the entirety of the ringside area to hit a Spear on Jey. Back in the ring, Bron removes the straps and looks for the Spear, but Jey counters with one of his own! He goes to the top, and hits the Uso Splash! He covers, and Bron just barely kicks out! The entire audience bit on that nearfall. It was that close!
Bron sits up, and he’s even more pissed. He kicks Jey back to the floor. He’s looking for the Super Spear again, but runs right into a vicious Superkick! Jey follows up with a Spear that sends Bron through the barricade at the time keeper’s area! He drags Bron into the ring, and hits the Spear again! He’s back up to the top rope, and he nails the Uso Splash! He makes the cover, and that’s enough for the win! Jey Uso has won the Intercontinental Championship – his first singles gold in WWE!
Man, that was exciting! Where it ranks among Raw history is up for the future to decide, but as far as Raw matches I’ve seen, that’s easily one of the best. It had a rabid crowd throughout, and both men brought their A Game. They told a great story here, of whether or not Jey could finally achieve singles gold success. Bron was a great bully here, beating the hell out of Jey for the entirety of the match. Jey, to his credit, once again played the underdog babyface very well.
The action was crisp, exciting, and furious throughout, and it felt every bit as a big time match as it was hyped up to be. It had great nearfalls as the match went on, and the closing stretch was phenomenal. This was a well earned victory for Jey, and another in a series of great performances from Bron. Just an all around fantastic piece of business.
