#275: Gunther vs. Jey Uso, WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event (1/25/2025).

This is for Gunther’s World Heavyweight Championship.

As they two prepare for their titanic clash at WrestleMania 41, we look back at their most recent outing, at this year’s Saturday Night’s Main Event. The story is the same then as it is now – Gunther doesn’t see Jey as anything more than a tag team wrestler, and Jey is out to prove that notion wrong.

The bell sounds, and Gunther rushes Jey in the corner with a boot to the face. Jey with a nice uppercut to Gunther, and Gunther responds with a chop to the chest. He gets Jey in the corner, and chops the shit out of his chest. Jey fires back with some body blows, and the 10 punches in the head. Gunther places Jey on the top rope, and chops him to the outside. Already a commercial break? Okay.

Back from break, and both men are throwing strikes in the ring. Gunther comes back with a clothesline to get him a nearfall. Nice powerslam by Gunther, followed by a boot to the face and a chop. Jey tries to follow up with some strikes, including a nice uppercut to the face. Gunther fires back with a hard irish whip into the corner. He stomps the arm right into the mat. Gunther takes control of the back, and rakes his forearm into the face of Main Event.

Jey gets back to his feet, and eats a chop to the chest. An uppercut by the champion, and a Samoan Drop by the challenger. Jey fires up for something, but Gunther drills him with the Shotgun Dropkick, and a Stacked Powerbomb for the quick nearfall. On the apron, Gunther stomps into Jey’s chest and jaw. Back from another break, and Jey is looking to finally take the fight to the champion. Gunther with another boot to the face, and Jey responds with a kick to the ribs.

Gunther with a release German Suplex, and Jey with a superkick out of nowhere. Jey covers, and Gunther kicks out. Jey avoids the shotgun dropkick, and hits the running hip attack in the corner. He makes the cover, and Gunther is able to kick out. Jey goes to the top rope, but Gunther is right back up with a series of chops to the chest. Gunther looks for a suplex, but Jey counters with punches to the ribs. He slips down, and hits a running sit out powerbomb! He covers, and Gunther kicks out!

Both men are back to their feet, and Jey reverses the powerbomb attempt into the Spear, and Gunther just barely kicks out! Jey with a superkick, and another Spear. Jey goes to the top rope, and he lands the Uso Splash! He grabs the legs, and Gunther still kicks out! The crowd bit on that one. Jey goes for a third Spear, but Gunther reverses it into two straight Powerbombs, and Gunther gets the win to retain the World Championship.

That was a good match, though it was too short for my liking. Good action throughout, which is what you’d expect from two guys who are good at blitz style wrestling. Gunther was dominant throughout, but he did a fantastic job of selling for Jey, and Jey himself did fantastic as the underdog once again. There was that one awesome nearfall at the end, where the crowd really believed that Jey had won the championship, which was well done. All in all, no complaints about this one. If they can do this much in such a short time here, imagine what they’ll do with more time at WrestleMania 41!
